The Red House
GV II
House. c1745, C19 alterations. For T Ayleworth. Brick with
stone and ashlar dressings; hipped old tile roof with 2 brick
stacks to returns. Georgian style. L-plan.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys; symmetrical 3-window range. Central
forward break under pediment. Stone plinth, brick plat band
over ground floor and top modillioned cornice. Round-headed
entrance has doorcase with pilasters and bracketed open
pediment, fanlight with thick decorative glazing bars over
6-flush-panel door. Ground floor has 2 canted bay windows with
hipped lead roofs over 6/6 sashes and side lights; windows to
first floor have moulded sills, and wedge lintels with key
blocks over 6/6 sashes in moulded frames. Left return has
modillioned brick eaves cornice. Rear has 2 gables.
