Farmhouse, with piggery and apple loft to east end, now house.
Believed to be c1580, with later additions and alterations
including C17 range to west end; refacing to south side at
west end late C19/early C20, and restorations of c1990.
Small, square panels of timber-framing to north and west end
with arched braces and brick nogging, some close studding
(mainly to interior), otherwise pinkish-brown brick on coursed
Wilmcote stone plinth and plain-tile roof.
Approximately L-plan with outshuts to each range, originally a
house of 2 units with pig sheds to east, and with taller range
added to west, gable end to front.
EXTERIOR: main (south) facade: single storey with attic,
4-window range altogether. Gable-ended range projects
slightly. Entrance to angle with a C20 plank door in moulded
wood frame, under C19 wooden open porch with 4-centred arches.
Late C20 fenestration throughout; ground floor has 2-and
3-light windows with glazing bars under elliptical arches;
first floor of gabled range has 3-light casement under
elliptical arch; 2-light casement between 2 attic gables with
casements to right range.
Modillion eaves cornices to right. Steeply pitched gabled
roofs, with outshuts under catslide roofs. Off-centre right
rear-ridge stack, lateral stack to left return.
INTERIOR: extensive timber-framing, close-studding to original
rear wall of earlier range, otherwise small frames with arched
braces, some jowled posts to attic, some lath and plaster
remains to attic.
Ground floor has in original east room an inglenook fireplace
with chamfered bressumer beam and 2 cupboards, to rear of this
a bread oven and remains of round stack. Main beam is
chamfered and has rounded stops.
To rear room of west wing an Aesthetic Movement cast-iron
range by Smith, model 82258 rd 26092, with slate fireplace.
Plank, 2- and 6-panel doors almost throughout, some with
wrought-iron latches and HL-hinges, to attic an C18
4-fielded-panel wig cupboard with HL-hinges above simple C18
fireplace.
Wood Lane Farmhouse, Elmedene (qv) and Appletree Cottage and
Vine Cottage (qv), Church Lane form a group.
