Church. 1902-3. By C Ford Whitcomb. Coursed squared limestone
with ashlar dressings; tile roofs. Wide eaves; flush quoins
and coped gables. Stone internal stack.
PLAN: 3-bay nave with north-east vestry and south porch; 2-bay
chancel with north-east tower and south chapel.
EXTERIOR: windows have Perpendicular tracery. Chancel has
gable cross over 3-light window with hood carried up as
fillet; foundation stone dated 1902. North and south sides
have 2-light straight-headed and traceried windows. 3-stage
tower has one diagonal buttress with gable dated 1909,
octagonal stair turret to west angle; 2-light
double-chamfered-mullioned window to east and similar 4-light
window to north; 2nd stage has double-chamfered light to 3
sides; bell stage has paired 2-light traceried and louvred
bell openings with inscriptions taken from the Te Deum on
lozenge panels between pairs of openings; partly pierced
panelled parapet and recessed lead-clad super-structure.
Chapel has 2-light straight-headed and traceried window to
east and west; south entrance with double-chamfered opening
and flanking straight-headed windows of 2 cusped lights.
Nave has gable crosses; north side has 2 offset buttresses and
2 straight-headed and traceried windows, blind bay to west;
vestry to east has north gable with entrance and window of 2
cusped lights, upper double-chamfered cusped light with hood;
window of 3 cusped lights to west; south side similar, 2
windows to east of pointed entrance with continuous mouldings
and paired plank doors has gabled porch with enriched open
timber-framing on low stone walls; bronze sundial to one
buttress. Several lead rainwater heads and downspouts.
INTERIOR: reported as having late C18 pulpit from former
Church of St Thomas a Becket and wall monuments of 1784 and
1801.
The church replaced the Church of St Thomas a Becket,
1798-1913, of which the tower only remains (qv).
