Perhaps 2 cottages and stable, now public house. Probably C17
or early C18; altered. Painted brick, slate roof. Elongated
single-depth plan, the domestic portion forming approximately
2-thirds of the whole with the former stable continued to the
left. 2 storeys and 4 windows (plus 2 inserted openings at 1st
floor); square-headed doorways (d) and windows (w) in rhythm
w-d-w-w-d-w-w-d, the 2nd and 3rd doorways having painted plain
surrounds and the latter 2 steps up (both doors altered). The
former domestic portion has flush-mullion windows of 2, 2 and
3 lights at ground floor, 2, 2 and 2 at 1st floor; the other
portion has 2 small square windows flanking the doorway, both
with run-out lintels, and at 1st floor a 2-light casement
offset left and a rectangular ventilating louvred window to
the right (a small inserted window right of this). Rebuilt
ridge chimney at junction of the 2 portions.
INTERIOR altered. One of the few surviving examples of C18
courtyard development in the centre of Wigan.
