848-1/4/340 Higher Withleigh Farmhouse

GV II

Farmhouse. C16 or C17, remodelled mid C19. Rendered cob walls;
dry slate roof; brick end stacks and former lateral stack
projecting from rear roof slope; cast-iron ogee gutters.
Originally a 3-room and probable through-passage plan,
extended at rear in the C19 and the roof remodelled to cover
the extensions plus later C19 dairy lean-tos behind.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys; slightly irregular 4-window range. Early
C19 16-pane hornless sashes to 1st floor; similar tripartite
sash to ground-floor right, the other 2 ground-floor windows
replaced mid/late C20 in original openings, the central (hall)
window is very wide but reduced from original width. Doorway
with old panelled and glazed door towards left and doorway
with C20 door central to fenestration towards right.
INTERIOR: has large C17 hall fireplace with later fireplace
built within it at rear of room; C17 axial beam with run-out
stops; also in hall some C19 panelled doors; C19 king-post
roof structure.
