Garden walls to allotment to rear of
Penrose Almshouses
GV II
Garden walls to allotment rear of Penrose Almshouses (qv).
Probably C17. Cob with slate coping. The walls enclose a large
garden behind the almshouses, with access from the almshouse
court via a passageway, suggesting that the garden is
contemporary with the almshouses, completed 1627.
Tall brown cob walls with some unfortunate C20 cement repair.
HISTORICAL NOTE: cob buildings are known from the High Street
in Barnstaple, nevertheless; it is an unusual urban building
material and important to the fine C17 almshouse complex.
