GV II

Swimming baths. 1871 by WH Knight. Flemish bond yellow brick
with red brick bands and limestone ashlar dressings;
low-pitched gabled slate roof with slate roofs to side-wall
lean-tos and lead roof to front porch and flanking lean-tos;
yellow brick stack to boiler-house. High Victorian style.
Rectangular plan with hall flanked by work-shop and
boiler-room to front (south-east) and toilets-pavilion to
north-east.
EXTERIOR: front elevation: one-storey, 10-window range, with
slightly-projecting, gabled porch and hipped outer bays. Porch
has stone lintels over half-glazed double doors and flanking
2-pane sashes to porch and stone lintels set in dentilled
eaves over paired 2-pane sashes; gable end of pool building,
set to rear, has red brick impost course and semicircular arch
over large lunette window of abstracted geometrical design.
Similar larger window to north-west gable. Side walls have
stone lintels set in dentilled brick eaves over 14 rectangular
windows to lean-tos and stone lintels over 8 groups of 3
square windows beneath eaves of main pool building; projecting
north-east toilets-pavilion has hipped roof surmounted by
louvred ventilation cupola.
INTERIOR: noted in 1990 List description as including: main
pool in yellow brick with black tile courses, red brick bands
and red brick piers and segmental arches with keystones to
6-bay arcades along side walls with front-divide cubicles with
dog-tooth top rail and chamfered architraves and muntins to
plank partitions; all alcoves and cubicles have tiled dados
with strip of pale blue floral tiles. A-frame roof with
wrought-iron bracing.
A very good example of its type, the architectural treatment
skilfully related to the functional requirements of the
building.

Interest: Department of the Environment: Borough of
Cheltenham: 1983-).
