Pair of semi-detached houses and walls to sides. Designed 1824 by John Forbes, shown as built on Merrett's Map of 1834. Stucco (probably originally ashlar) over brick with concealed roof and stucco party-wall stack; ashlar wall at right; iron porch to right and window box to left. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys on basement, 4 first-floor windows. Stucco detailing includes plinth, first-floor band, crowning frieze and cornice with central raised panel, copings. 6/6 sashes where original, in plain reveals and with sills. End entrances: 4-panel doors, that to left part-glazed, with overlights. Wall to sides have shaped cornice and doors to rear garden. INTERIOR: noted as having original joinery including shutters visible to right. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: house to right (No.5) has tent porch with double scrolls. Window box to ground floor at right has X-motif. Wall to right abuts No.6 (qv) HISTORICAL NOTE: Montpellier Villas was originally known as Montpellier Retreat. Forbes was architect and surveyor to the Pittville Estate, 1835-6. Forms a group with Nos 1, 2 and 3 (The Beehive Hotel) and Nos 6 and 7 (qv) and 8 and 9 (qv).
