Terrace of 4 houses with attached area railings to No.2,
attached forecourt railings, piers and overthrow to No.4 and
attached area railings, wall and pier to No.8. c1820-34, shown
on Merrett's Map of 1834. Ashlar over brick, painted and
stuccoed to ground floor except to right; with brick
party-wall stacks, concealed roof and iron porches, balconies
and railings; brick right end wall with stone copings,
stuccoed piers, that to right ashlar. Double-depth plan with
side stairwells and 2-storey service ranges to rear. End
houses break forwards.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys on basement, 10 first-floor windows
(arranged 2:3:3:2). Detailing includes, to end houses:
horizontal rustication to ground floor and tooled architraves
to first-floor windows with frieze and cornices; full-height
pilasters with sunk panels to first and second floors to
breakforwards; crowning entablature with low parapet, that to
left has raised panels. First floor has 6/6 sashes, those to
end houses with margin-lights, otherwise tall 6/6 sashes;
second floor has 6/6 sashes to centre houses otherwise 8/8
sashes; ground floor has tripartite windows to end houses: 6/6
between 2/2 sashes with cambered heads where original,
otherwise 6/6 sashes. Entrances: 2 to left and 2 to right:
steps to 5-panel doors, the upper panels raised and fielded,
the lower panels flush, with sidelights and overlights, some
with margin-lights. Basements have 3/3 sashes. Rear retains
6/6 sashes. Right return has staircase sash, 9/9 with
margin-lights.
INTERIOR: retain original joinery including panelled shutters,
otherwise not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: First-floor balconies throughout have
Carron Company double heart and anthemion motif. Porch to
right end house has lozenge motif to uprights and frieze, with
tent roof. Area railings have X-motif to left and
circle-and-lozenge motif to right. Arrowhead railings to No.4
extending to coped piers with ornate overthrow. To right end,
wall approx 2m high x 3m long to pier, square on plan with
shaped cornice and capping.
