Terrace of 15 houses, now houses and hotel, and attached railings except to No.41. Numbered right to left, described left to right. c1837-45 with later alterations. Stucco over brick with slate roof, brick and stucco party-wall, end and rear stacks; wrought- and iron verandahs, balustrades and railings. Double-depth plan with side stairhalls and full-height service ranges to rear. EXTERIOR: the 2 houses at either end and to centre have breakforwards to ground floor, those to left comprise a pavilion with 6 fluted Ionic columns through 2 upper floors surmounted by pediment, not present elsewhere and so loosing the intended symmetry of the design. 3 storeys, 3 first-floor windows each. Stucco detailing includes horizontal rustication to ground floor, first- and second-floor windows have tooled architraves, those to first floor with cornices; crowning entablature (missing at right). Ground and first floors have tall 6/6 sashes where original, second floor has 3/6 sashes, basements have some 8/8 and 3/6 sashes; all in plain reveals and with sills. Entrances to left, except to west end a central entrance, flights of roll-edged steps to 2- and 4-panel doors with overlights, some with margin-lights. INTERIOR: retain original joinery and plasterwork including panelled shutters; several have narrow-open-well staircases with alternate stick and embellished rods and wreathed handrails; some white marble fireplaces; some cornices have acanthus modillions and fleurons. Otherwise not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: No.29 (at right) has arrowhead railings for approx 5m, with urn finials to stanchions. Area railings and to sides of steps have interlaced lozenge motif. Continuous balconies to each house have X-motif with anthemion (Nos 29 and 31); X-motif (No.33); Nos 35-55 have balconies with anthemion motif derived from Henry Shaw's design for Upper Woburn Place.
