School of Art and Design, originally built as Pupil Teachers' Centre, and now part of Bolton Metropolitan College. 1901; Bradshaw and Gass, architects. Brick and terracotta with slate roof. EXTERIOR AND PLAN: 2 storeys over basement; symmetrically planned with 2 parallel ranges, the rear range longer than the front, with entrances in projecting porches, and stair towers in angle formed to each side. Flat roofed porches arcaded with segmentally arched doors and windows, and stair towers terminating in bell-cast roofs carried on short pilasters over arcaded upper storey. Main range facing to street is symmetrically designed, with 2-window full-height central canted bay, the lower mullioned and transomed windows divided by a further canted projection with domed roof. Large studio windows to upper storey. Mullioned and transomed windows continuous across outer bays in lower storey, and tripartite windows above, with wide central segmentally arched light beneath gable. Rear also symmetrical about a central full-height canted bay. Central bay has paired transomed windows to ground floor, and tripartite segmentally headed window above. Pilasters mark its angles and continue to articulate the open-work terracotta balustrade of the parapet. Outer ranges have continuous bands of fenestration, divided by pilasters into bays, 3-1-3-1, with segmental pediment with lunette over inner 3-window range, and domed bow with 2 tiers of window to ground floor in outer ranges. INTERIOR: not inspected SUBSIDARY FEATURES: the building is enclosed to the front by a wall, brick with terracotta dressings. A low plinth wall with concave moulded terracotta copings is divided by taller piers with terracotta ball finials to copings, and paired terracotta gate-piers to either side.
