Villa. c1830-34. Ashlar over brick with slate roof, right end
brick stacks. Regency-Gothic style. Double depth plan with
central hallway and with ranges to rear.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys on basement, 3 first-floor windows and
with 2-storey range set back to right. Breakforwards to outer
windows. Stucco detailing includes octagonal end stepped
buttresses surmounted by castellated finials, castellated
porch with similar pillars and with buttresses to either side
of window above; hoodmoulds to outer windows; crowning frieze
and blocking course with central raised 'pediment'.
3-pointed-light windows in straight-headed surrounds, and that
to centre stepped and with cusped lights, with 2/2 sashes,
those to centre with margin-lights. Central entrance, flight
of roll-edged steps to studded 6-panel door. Rear has pointed
staircase window with Gothic glazing to head and casements
with margin lights. Right return has pointed window a 3/3 sash
with Gothic glazing to head.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
HISTORICAL NOTE: houses along Tivoli Road (originally known as
Tivoli) are shown as laid out on Merrett's Map of 1834, with
several to the north end shown as built. Verey sites St
Oswalds as an example of Strawberry-Hill Gothic.
