Lower garden terrace walls and steps
at Moor Close

GV II

Part of the larger garden at Moor Close (qv). Walls enclosing
terrace, with steps. 1911, by Oliver Hill.
MATERIALS: Red brick, York stone, clay tile slips and pebbles.
PLAN: L-plan facing Moor Close on south-east and north-east
sides.
EXTERIOR: Brick retaining wall on north-east side, with
balustrade of semicircular pattern, but with many pieces
missing. In north-east section are 2 opposed semicircular
flights of stone steps with grassed area between, lower has 6
and 7 steps separated by circular landing of tile slips edged
with stone. Upper flight has 6 and 2 steps separated by
similar landing. Flight is flanked by 2 brick pillars with
moulded stone bases and caps with stone figures of 2 children
on each. Wall with weathered top on either side of pillars
which retains terrace surrounding house. Wall returns on
south-west to form north-west retaining wall of lower terrace.
In centre of this section of the wall, rectangular flight of
10 stone steps leading to upper garden terrace (qv) which is
on principal axis of garden leading to bridge (qv). To left of
steps wall continues down south-west side of lower terrace. In
left hand corner flight of 6 and 3 semicircular stone steps
with circular landing of tile slips and pebbles edged with
stone.
