Large country house in parkland with lake. Early C18 altered
C19 and mid C20.
MATERIALS: red brick in Flemish bond, steeply pitched, hipped,
tile roof.
PLAN: H-plan, appearance on each side is a shallow U. Stable
block and service wing adjoining on south-east (qv).
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and attics, with rendered plinth except in
centre section which has moulded brick. Brick band at first
floor containing some blue headers, deep moulded eaves cornice
with square modillions. Several dormers, those in the centre
section with alternating triangular and segmental pediments,
others painted, with semicircular pediments. Several tall,
ridge chimneys with multiple stacks, corniced heads and clay
pots. Sash windows with glazing bars, gauged brick arched
heads and louvred shutters.
Entrance front, north-east, symmetrical 11-bay windows, 7 in
centre section, 2 each in projecting end wings. 3-bay
projecting centrepiece with pediment and similar cornice.
Projecting C19, 3-bay enclosed ground floor porch with 4
Tuscan columns and entablature with modillion and dentil
cornice, half glazed double doors with rectangular overlight.
Elaborately carved wooden, inner double doors with scrolls and
foliated decoration.
Garden front, south-east, symmetrical in similar style. Long,
ground floor loggia between side wings with balustraded
balcony above. Early C20 round bays added to ends of wings.
INTERIOR: entrance hall with 4 Ionic columns supporting
moulded, panelled beams. Dog-leg staircase in open well with
decorative plaster ceiling, modillioned cornice enriched with
egg-and-dart ornament. Staircase has closed string with carved
leaf ornament, turned balusters and moulded handrail.
Ante-room has fireplace with roll-moulded stone and carved
wooden surround, mantelpiece enriched with bead and reel
ornament. Drawing room has elaborate plaster ceiling and
moulded ceiling cornice, enriched with floral decoration, bead
and reel, and egg-and-dart ornament. Marble chimneypiece with
Ionic engaged colonnettes, foliated frieze and dentilled
cornice to moulded mantelpiece. Large mirror above in moulded
surround and similar entablature.
