School, now closed, unoccupied at time of visit (Apr. 2004),c.1870 with C20 addition at rear, architects probably Austin & Paley. Built in coursed dressed sandstone under graduated slate roofs.
Plan: uneven cross with two storeys, 3 bays to left of cross wing, 5 to right plus single storey entrance porch at end.
ELEVATION: Entrances at right end (boys) and to left of cross wing (girls and infants). Two dormers in second and fourth bays to right of cross wing. Continuous band throughout at first floor level. Ground floor glazing lost throughout. Tall mullioned windows to left of cross wing, GIRLS & INFANTS inscribed above entrance with 4-pane light above. Gable end has two pointed arch windows at ground and first floor, those above being tall 21 pane sashes. Windows to the right also pointed arches, with 12 panes, including dormers. Small clock or bell tower in centre ridge of right side with pyramid roof. Entrance to right has shouldered arch doorway with original door. Drip moulded panel above, though any lettering is gone. To rear, stone-walled playground. Boarded-up C20 stone and glass extension attached to side of cross wing.
INTERIOR: not examined
History: date of construction and attribution of architects not confirmed, but bears stylistic comparison with the listed Royal Grammar School opposite which is by Sharpe and Paley (1851) with later extensions by Paley and Austin (c.1887). School closed 2003.
