The Tower was central to the wartime Royal Air Force base at Elvington, near York, part of 4 Group of Bomber Command. Home of 77 Squadron RAF October 1942 to May 1944 , then the war's only two French heavy bomber squadrons, 346 and 347 moved in. They left in October 1945 and the base was transferred to 40 Group, Maintenance Command. The site was tranfered back to the original owners after the war and the tower was the first builidng to be restored, inside and out, by the Yorkshire Air Museum and Allied Air Forces Memorial in the 1980s. The site now covers about 18 acres and is owned by the museum.
