19-JUN-06 Garden Walls at Tory Farm
II
Garden boundary wall of 17th century date constructed from grey granite. Extending for a length of approximately 24 metres and defining the front and south western boundary of the front garden of Tory Farm. The wall varies in height from approximately 0.75 metres to 1.5 metres where the ground slopes away to the south west. The wall is constructed of roughly coursed granite blocks with massive corner quoins, moulded and shaped ridge-backed coping stones and four shaped finials. The two gate piers are square in plan and some 2 metres in height. They are constructed of granite ashlar topped with monumental moulded and shaped finials. A section wall to the north east constructed in granite random rubble is believed to be later in date and not of significance.
History: The walls may be dated on stylistic grounds to the 17th century and are thought to relate to an earlier contemporary building which occupied the site of the present farmhouse and which was destroyed during the siege of Falmouth in the Civil War (1646).
