House, now flats. c1780.
MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar to front and rear, rubble below basement windows; double pile parapeted mansard roof, Welsh slate to front, artificial slate to rear, with coped party wall with single large ashlar stack with two early clay pots to right. Staircase to front.
EXTERIOR: Three storeys, attic, basement and sub-basement; two-window front. First floor has two similar windows with stone sills. Ground floor has similar window to right, to left six-panel door with flush beaded, fielded and single glazed panel with cast iron lion's mask knocker in stone doorcase with cyma moulded architrave in flat surround with heavy moulded console brackets supporting projecting moulded cornice, over Pennant paved crossover flush with pavement which has cast iron footscraper. Basement has plate glass sash in splayed reveal; six-panel door in slate roofed extension from crossover into area. One double dormer with two plate glass casement windows. Band course over ground floor; sill and to first floor; moulded eaves cornice and coped parapet. Rear elevation has full height canted bay with plate glass sashes with and without horns.
INTERIOR: Not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: Attached wrought iron railings and gate with shaped heads on concrete and limestone bases, to right refixed on buns on Pennant bases.
HISTORY: Dated by Ison to 1780, the Bath Chronicle reported an `Auction of the estate known as Ainslies's Belvedere, being 6 substantial dwelling houses' on 27.11.1794. A William Ainslie was one of the original lessees of a house in The Circus.
