Two houses, now flats. c1790-1793. By John Palmer.
MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar to front, rubble to basement and rear. Concrete tile double pile parapeted roof to right (former No.30), to left (former No.29) concrete tile double pile parapeted mansard roof, each house has coped gable wall to right with ashlar and rendered stacks with some early clay pots.
EXTERIOR: House to left (former No.29) has staircase to front, three storeys, attic and basement, to right (former No.30) staircase probably removed, four storeys and basement, each three-window range. First floor of both houses has three six/nine-sashes in plain reveals with stone sills and wrought iron balconettes, second floor of both houses has three six/six sashes in plain reveals, third floor to right (former No.30) has three six/six-sashes in plain reveals with stone sills. Ground floor to left (former No.29) has two six/six horned sashes in plain reveals with stone sills to right, to left six-panel door with reeded and raised and fielded panels in pedimented Doric doorcase with one pennant step, small two-pane window with decorative wrought iron guard to left of door, pennant paved crossover with cast iron footscraper, ground floor to right (former No.30) has three six/six-sashes in plain reveals with stone sills. Basement has two C20 windows and C20 half-glazed door to left (former No.29), three C20 six/six-sashes in plain reveals with stone sills to right (former No.30), ashlar shelf under crossover, C20 area steps. Mansard to left (former No.29) has raking double dormer with six/six-sashes. Band courses over ground floors to both houses, sill bands to second floor windows; frieze, moulded eaves cornice and coped parapet to left (former No.29), similar frieze and cornice over second floor formerly at eaves to right (former No.30), moulded eaves cornice and coped parapet. Rear elevation retains early glazing bar sashes with wrought iron balconettes to first floor.
INTERIOR: Not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: Attached C20 railings and gate on limestone bases.
HISTORY: Part of incomplete St James's Square development on land leased by Fielder, King, Hewlett and Broom from Sir Peter Rivers Gay 25 March 1790; upper part of Park Street commenced to design of John Palmer and continued but not completed to design of John Pinch after 1808, street formerly terminated by All Saints' Chapel at top and intended to be continued in a NW direction as Regent Place.
