House. c1790-1793 with C19 and C20 alterations. By John Palmer.
MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar to front and rear, Welsh slate double pile parapeted mansard roof with coped gable wall and two ashlar stacks with some early clay pots to right. Staircase to rear.
EXTERIOR: Three storeys, attic and basement, two-window range. First floor has two C19 plate glass horned sashes in plain reveals with wrought iron balconettes, second floor has two six/six-sashes in plain reveals, ground floor has to right one C19 plate glass horned sash in plain reveal with stone sill, to left door with two reeded and two raised and fielded panels, single glazed panel in top and C19 cast iron knocker, in pedimented Doric doorcase, with two steps to pennant paved crossover with cast iron footscraper. Basement has six/six-sash in plain reveal with stone sill, plank door and two-light window in ashlar infilling under crossover, C20 area steps. Double dormer has two/two-sashes with moulded architrave. Band course over ground floor, sill bands to first floor and second floor windows, frieze, moulded eaves cornice and coped parapet. Lead hopperhead and short length of lead pipe at eaves to right. Rear elevation retains early glazing bar sashes, wrought iron balconette to second floor, double dormer with two/two-sashes. Single storey extension and cantilevered bathroom extension to second half landing in ashlar.
INTERIOR: Not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: Attached wrought iron railings and gate with shaped heads on limestone bases.
HISTORY: Part of incomplete St James's Square development on land leased by Fielder, King, Hewlett and Broom from Sir Peter Rivers Gay 25 March 1790; upper part of park Street commenced to design of John Palmer and continued but not completed to design of John Pinch after 1808, street formerly terminated by All Saints' Chapel at top and intended to be continued in a NW direction as Regent Place.
