House, now flats. c1790-1793 with C19 and C20 alterations. By John Palmer.
MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar to front, rubble to rear. Concrete tile double pile parapeted mansard roof with coped party wall with two ashlar stacks with early clay pots to right. Staircase to front.
EXTERIOR: Three storeys, attic and basement, three-window range. First floor has three six/nine-sashes retaining some crown glass in plain reveals with stone sills and wrought iron balconettes. Second floor has three six/six-sashes in plain reveals with iron guards. Ground floor has three C19 plate glass horned sashes in plain reveals with stone sills to right, door with reeded and raised and fielded panels and single glazed upper panel in pedimented Doric doorcase with one pennant step, one step to pennant paved crossover, small two-pane window with guard and two wrought iron bars to left of door. Basement has two C20 plate glass sashes and half-glazed C20 door, ashlar shelf under crossover, C20 area steps. One double and one single raking dormer, single with six/six-sash, double with plate glass and one/six-sashes. Band course over ground floor, sill band to second floor windows, frieze, moulded cornice and coped parapet. Lead hopperhead and downpipe attached to right. Rear elevation has C19 sashes with wrought iron balconettes to first floor, mansard built up to full third floor.
INTERIOR: Not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: Attached C20 railings and gate on limestone bases.
HISTORY: Part of incomplete St James's Square development on land leased by Fielder, King, Hewlett and Broom from Sir Peter Rivers Gay 25 March 1790; upper part of Park Street commenced to design of John Palmer and continued but not completed to design of John Pinch after 1808, street formerly terminated by All Saints' Chapel at top and intended to be continued in a NW direction as Regent Place.
