Raised pavement. Late C18.
MATERIALS: Pennant sandstone paving on and limestone rough ashlar revetment walls (concrete breeze block to No.14) with wrought iron railings.
EXTEROR: A gradual rise from the centre of Beaufort East terminates approx. 1.5m high fronting Nos. 13, 14 and 15 which have flights of steps. The railings to the steps of No.15 to the far right, continue to return and enclose the end of the terrace facing Beaufort Place. A cast iron coalhole cover with 5 circular glass panes is lettered: Hayward Brass 187-187 Union Street, Borough. March 16th 1854.
HISTORY: Beaufort East appears on a c1794 map. One of the various raised pavements in Bath which reflect the happy coincidence of available local stone and an exceptionally well-developed urban sensitivity which sought to make pedestrian routes visually elegant as well as functionally convenient.
