Former Thomas Street Chapel
31/05/73
GV II
Former Baptist chapel and Anglican church, now converted to apartments. Dated 1830, with extensive late C20 additions.
MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar facade, rubblestone right return, slate roof with C20 roof-lights.
PLAN: Rectangular plan.
EXTERIOR: Two storeys, three-window range. Coped parapet sweeps up from quoins over central panel inscribed: `THOMAS STREET CHAPEL 1830¿, and `DEO SACRUM DEO PATRI¿; cornice and double stepped frieze, continuous impost band to three full height semicircular arched recesses over C20 windows. C20 windows to right return and rear.
INTERIOR: Not inspected, known to be much altered.
HISTORY: Originally built as a Baptist chapel, as testified by the 'baptisterium' or total immersion font originally beneath the centre of the floor, it was later taken over by St Swithin's as a chapel-of-ease and known as St Thomas' Mission Church. It accommodated 300. It was repaired in 1884 at a cost of £150 and redecorated in 1892. The building belongs to the initial phase of the street's development and shows the provision of Non-conformist places of worship within the expanding edges of the town.
