Description

No.31 (rear of Nos.120 and 122)

(Formerly Listed as:
WALCOT STREET (East side)No.31
(Rear of Nos.120 and 122))

GV II

House. c1765.
MATERIALS: Painted limestone ashlar, roof unseen.
PLAN: Double depth plan.
EXTERIOR: Two storeys and basement to front, three storeys to rear, two-window front. Coped parapet, cornice and first floor platband returned to right, moulded architraves, six/six-pane sash windows (small square windows to right of door and to far left are plate glass), cornice over six-panel door to right. Rear has splayed reveals to ground floor window and C20 double doors to left.
INTERIOR: Not inspected. The front is a fully Palladian elevation, of the sort more usually encountered in more prominent street locations rather than, as here, hidden away down a passage. Map evidence shows that this house originally formed part of a row linking Chatham Row and Gibbs's Court (qqv), and that it did originally face onto Walcot Street prior to being hidden by later infilling of the forecourt.
