GV II

Detached house. 1828 (according to the title deeds).
MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar, double pitched slate roof with tall moulded stacks to returns.
PLAN: Double depth plan.
EXTERIOR: Two storeys and basement, symmetrical three window front. Slightly returned coped parapet, cornice, cornice band, ground floor platband and plinth. Margin-paned French windows to first floor are flanked by six/six pane sash windows opening onto balcony with circles to uprights supporting swept canopy and fronted by trellised railings. Ground floor verandah supporting balcony has cast iron supports with vine motifs (possibly late C19), and scrolls and circles to upper corners. Six/six pane sash windows flank studded four panel door with margin paned overlight. Ground floor terrace has plain railings, wreathed at base of steps leading up to the door. Parapeted ground floor range to left has projecting gabled late C19 conservatory on iron poles over basement entrance.
INTERIOR: Not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: To right of front garden arcade of ten wrought iron arches with circles to spandrels support segmental curved roof that leads to basement entrance.
A highly characteristic Late Georgian house, with a fine display of architectural ironwork. A 1945 photo in National Monument Record shows plate glass sashes and French window to centre of first floor; the house was then called 'Kirton'.
