Summary

First World War memorial, c1920, with later additions for the Second World War.

Description

DESCRIPTION: the memorial stands in the churchyard of Chorlton Methodist Church in a grassy area to the left of the footpath. It is made from granite; at the tip of the four sided granite column, is a cross of Celtic design. The column is set on a small square, inscribed plinth which is set on a much thinner level, inscribed with the dates 1914-1918. Below this, are two more inscribed plinths, the top one is four sided, but with slight narrowing at the top, giving it a sloping effect. The base plinth is larger in circumference, and is square in appearance.

The column and the small plinth (front) carries the inscription TO / THE GLORY OF / GOD / AND / IN MEMORY OF THOSE FROM OUR CHURCH AND SCHOOL WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914-1918 / (NAMES). The inscription on the bottom plinth (front) is inscribed THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE

Further names of those who died in the First World War are recorded on the left side.

The names of those died in the Second World War are recorded on the right side and the bottom plinth is inscribed FAITHFUL UNTO DEATH
