Description

Late 18th century with later additions and alterations. 2-storey, 3-bay rectangular-plan, Palladian-inspired house with flanking single storey pavilions. Stugged ashlar with droved ashlar dressings, raised margins, to S elevation; sandstone rubble with polished ashlar dressings with broadly droved ashlar tails to N elevation; sandstone rubble with polished ashlar dressings to pavilions. Base course, eaves course, raised long and short quoins.

S ELEVATION: glazed door to centre with radial fanlight above and consoled polished ashlar pediment; window at 1st floor above. Window to each floor of flanking bays. Pavilions set back symmetrical to either side with Venetian windows at ground tripartite thermae to gablehead and blinded side lights. Pavilion to E also, with glazed door to linking wall.

N ELEVATION: squared and snecked sandstone with droved dressings single storey addition with coped wallhead at ground of 3-bay group to centre; advanced to centre with polished ashlar porch with timber cornice to centre with 9-ornamental panelled door with moulded architrave and round-arched windows to each return elevation. 2 windows to each side of centre at ground. Round-arched stair window to centre at 1st floor; window to each flanking bay. Formerly each advanced pavilion identical, as to S elevation; now pavilion to W with modern garage door to centre at ground.

12-pane timber sash and case windows. Piended slate roof with 2-pane 19th century rooflights. Ashlar coped wallhead stacks to E and W. Slate roof to each pavilion with ashlar coped stack.

INTERIOR: not seen, 1996.

BOUNDARY WALL, GATEPIERS AND OUTBUILDING: rubble wall to N (adjacent to road) with rubble coping. Square-plan sandstone gatepiers with pyramidal coping to NW of house. Rubble quadrant walls to NE with ashlar coping with square-plan coped gatepiers to pedestrian entrance. Rubble outbuilding (now garage, 1996, with garage door to S) sited adjacent to NW gate; rectangular-plan with vents near ridge to W and E of slate roof.

Statement of Interest

The house is situated to SE of Edrom Newton steading (see separate listing). The building is currently part of the Manderston estate.
