Description

Earlier 19th century with later additions and alterations. Single storey, 3-bay classically-detailed gate lodge with single storey addition at rear; porch in re-entrant angle to front. Coursed and diagonally-droved cream sandstone; sandstone ashlar dressings. Raised base course; raised eaves course beneath corniced eaves; plain parapet with panelled dies at each corner. Raised quoins; raised margins; projecting cills. Dry-dashed rear addition.

SE (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: 2-leaf timber panelled door at centre; single windows in flanking bays. Small-pane glazing to porch recessed to right; single window in single storey addition recessed to outer right.

SW (SIDE) ELEVATION: single window centred at ground in original block to right. Single window centred in later addition to left.

NW (REAR) ELEVATION: single windows in 3-bay addition.

NE (SIDE) ELEVATION: single window centred in original block recessed to left; part-glazed modern timber door in porch advanced to right; single storey addition projecting to outer right.

Predominantly 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows; some modern glazing to later addition. Grey slate piended roof to original block; corniced ridge stack at centre; circular cans.

INTERIOR: not seen 1998.

ENTRANCE WALLS AND GATEPIERS: low coped sandstone walls flanking entrance. Square-plan, stop-chamfered corniced sandstone gatepiers with shallow pyramidal caps; modern gates.

Statement of Interest

B Group comprises Bughtrig House, the East and West Lodges and Wood Cottage (see separate list entries). A simple classical lodge, built to serve the nearby Bughtrig House. The entrance walls and gatepiers to the West are listed with the West Lodge.
