Description

Probably 18th century, with subsequent alterations. 2-storey, 3-bay stables. Harl pointed rubble, ashlar dressings. 3 segmental-headed bays in E and W long elevations, each with later infilling with door or narrow window or both, except centre bay in E elevation. 2 large oculi symmetrically placed in both 1st floor elevations serving loft as 'pitching eyes'.

Statement of Interest

'Pitching eyes' are circular openings, approximating to the

size and shape of truss of hay on pitch-fork, elevated from

wagon to loft for storage.

Mary Sleigh, wife of Alexander, 19th Brodie, carried out many improvements to Brodie Castle policies. She may have

introduced this English feature.
