Description

Probably 18th century, with subsequent alterations. 2-storey, 3-bay stables. Harl pointed rubble, ashlar dressings. 3 segmental-headed bays in E and W long elevations, each with later infilling with door or narrow window or both, except centre bay in E elevation. 2 large oculi symmetrically placed in both 1st floor elevations serving loft as pitching eyes .

Statement of Interest

'Pitching eyes' are circular openings, approximating to the

size and shape of truss of hay on pitch-fork, elevated from

wagon to loft for storage.

Mary Sleigh, wife of Alexander, 19th Brodie, carried out many improvements to Brodie Castle policies. She may have

introduced this English feature.
