Circa 1760. A picturesque manmade grotte, possibly enlarging a natural cave, hewn from the red sandstone E bank of the Dippol Gorge, to the E of Auchinleck House. Roughly made doorway chamfered to pointed arches with similarly treated windows on each side. Inside approximately 15'7" wide, 11' high, with moulded cornice at height of 7'6" and coffered ceiling.
Reputedly visited by Samuel Johnson on 4 November 1773, who was informed by his host, Lord Auchinleck that the grotto cost less to make than an ordinary room of similar size (Hoyle). Johnson visited Auchinleck on his tour of Scotland in company with Lord Auchinleck's eldest son, James Boswell, who was Johnson's travelling companion.
