Description

Probably mid-18th century. Ice and meat storing cave, hollowed out of the red sandstone? bank of the Dippel Gorge. Short entrance tunnel approximately 2'6" wide, leading to egg-shaped chamber approximately 12' high and 10' wide. Filled from the top and sealed with a stone lid.

Statement of Interest

The ice house was used to store salted meat through the winter months. The cave may be earlier than 18th century as it may have served earlier houses of Auchinleck. However its location near the mid-18th century mansion, its drive and associated bridges and Boswell's Summerhouse, suggests a roughly contemporary date.
