Dated 1749. 2-storey, 3-bay classical house with steeply
pedimented inner bay and recessed single storey flanking wings
(parallel 2-storey rear range connected with house by narrow
link). Rubble-built, with ashlar dressings and chamfered
margins. House has central door (on S wall) in lugged architrave,
with pulvinated frieze and pediment. Plate glass sashes.
Eaves/lintel band; cornice; small-paned and keystoned oculus in pediment. Straight skews; margined and corniced end stacks (small
stack over pediment). Wings altered in 19th century and now with enlarged single windows. Rear range has been raised; altered
openings; door and small-paned windows on N wall. All roofed with uniform slates.
2 square gatepeirs to S, ashlar, shaped caps, and ball finials
decorated with swags. Iron gate has plain vertical rails with
ball knobs.
Date in door pediment, and initials M. M(axwell).
1st floor window cills may be lowered.
Home of John Maxwell, author of the "Essay upon Tune" (see Old Statistical Account, vol XIII p.591).
Replaces an earlier tower (OSA p.598).
