Description

Late 17th century house with 18th century streading. 2-storey, 5-bay (3 now visible) traditional house, with single storey cottage to right (E), Z-plan steading joined to left (SW). cream sandstone rubble, ashlar dressings. Raised margins, chamfered reveals, relieving arch to windows and door of house, quoins.

HOUSE: S elevation to courtyard: 3-bay (2 obscured to left by W wing of steading); door flanked by small windows to left, regular windows to each bay to right, and at 1st floor. Range adjoined at right angles to outer left.

E (side) elevation: gablehead window.

N (rear) elevation: 4 near-symmetrical bays, circular stair tower to center, window at ground and 1st floor to left, arrowslit window at ground to right, window at outer right, 2 windows above.

W (side) elevation: window at ground to right, gablehead to left.

12-pane sash and case windows. Grey slate roof, coped sandstone stacks to gables.

COTTAGE: S elevation: 2-bay, door to left, window to right.

N elevation: 1 window.

12-pane sash and case windows. Crowstepped gable with apex stack and beak skewputts to E, grey slate roof.

STEADING: rubble, W and S ranges heightened twice using coursed rubble.

W range: 2-storey.

E (courtyard) elevation: door to right, arrowslit to left, door to far left, and door over at 1st floor.

W elevation: door to left, with loading door over at 1st floor, 2 arrowslits to right. Red pantiled roof, 2 roof-lights to W, ashlar coped skews. 3 stone beeboles recessed in adjoining SW wall.

S range: 2-storey.

N (courtyard) elevation: 3-bay, door to centre, flanked by windows, blocked window at 1st floor to right.

S elevation: 2 narrow blocked windows at ground. Corrugated iron roof, ashlar coped skews.

E range: single storey.

N (Courtyard) elevation: door to right, enlarged door to left, brick infill over.

E elevation: gabled with blocked dovecot.

Red pantiled roof.

Range extending on NS axis from E range; single storey, red pantiled roof.

GATEPIERS AND ENCLOSING WALLS: low cream sandstone rubble wall, smooth rusticated and corniced piers.
