Description

Dated 1691 on lintel. Now early 19th century in
character many alterations in 19th century. 2-storey,
5-bay double-pile farmhouse with basement. White painted
harling, painted margins; blocking course, chamfered
reveals.
Steps with barley sugar cast-iron railings to door at
centre, roll-moulded architrave dated 1691 with leaves
at angles, strip fanlight. Unfortunate tripartite with
stone mullions and heavy lintel flanking at ground; 3
windows to basement at right. 5 windows at 1st floor.
Irregular window pattern at rear; iron bars to basement
and stair window.
Sash and case windows; predominantly 12-pane glazing
pattern, plate glass to tripartites.
Grey slates to piended roof; 4 sandstone wallhead stacks
with cornice.

Statement of Interest

House appears on 18th century maps and plans as larger

block with flanking wings, probably incorporating earlier

building from which dated lintel survives. Reported to be

derelict in 1835 (The New Statistical Account). The mansion

reduced in size and height by 1880, as farmhouse (Martine).

Garden Walls and Orangery survive; listed separately.
