c.1705. Trad. 2 storeys and garret. incorporating vaulted

1st storey from earlier castle. Harled. Double-ridged roof,

slated.

INTERIOR: Advocate's Room and Long Gallery. Original. Other rooms altered c.1785-95. 'Gothick' addition on S.

c.1785-95 to design of proprietor Robert Brown: Ashlar, with buttresses, pinnacles, pointed windows. Castellated additions to N. by David Bryce. Ashlar. Corbie-stepped. Gabled Tower.

Statement of Interest

Built for Sir David Forbes, lawyer, who acquired estate in 1703. His nephew, Duncan Forbes of Culloden (Inverness-shire) Lord Advocate and Lord President, used to visit it. Passed to Hays 1748 and to Hugh Brown, merchant, 1783.
