Uploader's Comments

Dunglass Estate dates back to at least the 14th century and was owned by the Earls of Home among others. The castle on the site was destroyed by Somerset in 1548 but was rebuilt by 1603 when James VI stayed on his way south to England. The property was bought by the Hall family in 1687. They remained until Sir John Richard Hall, 9th Baronet sold it to Francis James Usher in 1919. Sir James Hall 4th Baronet (1761-1832) was a prominent geologist and friends with many figures from the enlightenment including Robert Burns who stayed with him. He built a new house in 1807-1813 and this was gutted by fire in 1947 and subsequently demolished. Many estate buildings remain are still in use including the Stable Block now a house.
