Description

Dated 1854. 2-storey, 3-bay rectangular farmhouse with rear single- storey service wing. Lying-pane sash and case glazing throughout. Rubble masonry, ashlar dressings, slate roof.

S ELEVATION: central door with rebated doorpiece and pediment, plain transom light; 2 windows at ground floor, 3 at 1st, chamfered margins with slightly advanced cills; eaves cornice.

E AND W GABLES: 2 windows at ground and 1st floors, shouldered and coped stacks.

N ELEVATION: border glazed and coloured stair window; single storey service wing with gable and stack (brick heightened); 3 barred windows at W elevation. Adjoining walled yard to E with gates N and E, dated 1854 at top centre E wall W elevation.

Bothy NE of house: rectangular plan, rubble with piend slate roof.

Statement of Interest

Built for John Anthony Macrae, who with Sir James Melville, Lord Provost of Edinburgh raised the first volunteer company in Scotland.
