Pencaitland Parish Church

Uploader's Comments

Pencaitland is an interesting little known village SE of Tranent. The Parish Church is a beautiful but complex mixture of styles and ages. The lower parts of the tower N,E and W alls are probably from the 13th century church, one of many built at this time along the S coast of the Forth. The present church dates from the 16th or 17th century with the tower dated 1631. The octagonal part is both belfry and dovecot. On the N side are two aisles of very different design and date. The Saltoun Aisle is mid 17th century while the Winton Aisle is a two bay chapel dated to the 13th century but probably later in an earlier style. This aisle is much altered mainly in the 17th century. The graveyard has many interesting stones.
