Description

Earlier 19th century, extended probably 1930s. Single storey, 2-bay, T-plan gate lodge with Tudor detailing, Italianate roof with deep overhanging eaves creating the effect of a broken pediment, and extension to rear. Squared, coursed, tooled sandstone to principal elevations, harled masonry to rear extension, with polished ashlar dressing throughout. Base course. Hoodmoulds above chamfered, stone-mullioned windows.

FURTHER DESCRIPTION: chamfered Tudor-arched former front doorway (now glazed) in advanced entrance bay to W elevation with capped, corniced tall octagonal pier to left and single light to side elevation; large, projecting canted window to right. Bipartite stone-mullioned window to N elevation. Bipartite stone-mullioned window and further single light to S elevation. Modern door and single light to W elevation of rear extension.

Variety of traditional glazing patterns including fixed-pane and timber sash and case. Coped, corniced octagonal sandstone ashlar ridge stack with tall clay can. Grey slate roof. Cast-iron rainwater goods.

GATEPIERS: 2 capped, corniced octagonal sandstone ashlar gatepiers.

GATES: 2-leaf decorative cast-iron gates. Similar decorative cast-iron railings joining E pier to gate lodge and W pier to boundary wall.

Statement of Interest

A good example of an earlier 19th century gate lodge, situated at the south-east entrance to the Blairquhan estate on the main road west from Straiton (B741), and forming an integral part of the designed landscape of the estate. Blairquhan (listed separately) was rebuilt by William Burn in 1821-4 for David Hunter Blair and Burn also some other estate buildings; he may have been responsible for this and Blairquhan and Milton Lodges (both listed separately), which are very similar.
