Description

Earlier to mid 19th century. 2-storey, 6-bay pair of traditional houses with 2-storey, 2-bay cottage at rear. Chlorite-slate with large quoins and slab lintels; harled at rear. Heavy harl pointing.

NOS 23 AND 25:

N (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: symmetrical. Bays to left with part-glazed timber door to centre at ground, windows in flanking bays and regular fenestration to 1st floor. Bays to right as above but with timber-clad pilastered and corniced doorpiece and modern door.

E AND W ELEVATIONS: blank gabled elevations.

S ELEVATION: No 23 with flat-roofed single storey addition at ground, small window to left at 1st floor; No 25 single storey lean-to extension and small window to right at 1st floor, Fonesca Cottage (see below) projecting at centre.

FONESCA COTTAGE:

W ELEVATION: lean-to porch projecting at centre and window in bay to right at ground, 2 further windows to 1st floor.

Plate glass glazing pattern in timber sash and case windows; modern glazing to Fonesca Cottage. Graded grey slates. Coped ashlar stacks with thackstanes and some cans.

Statement of Interest

Group with Nos 13-19, 35-45, 4-8, 12-16, 22-26 and 30-50 Kenmore Street. The present houses in Kenmore Street were built on the site of 18th century flax spinners cottages. No 23 was the police station, complete with cells, prior to the erection of the modern station to the W.
