Description

Brown and Watt, Aberdeen, 1896-7 (dated 1897). Tooled
granite, tooled ashlar sandstone dressings. Purpose-built
school with 2-storey, 3-bay centre block (housing full
height central hall) fronted by single storey, 3-bay NW
entrance front linking flanking gabled school rooms. Centre
door under shaped and finialled datestone with flanking
tripartites. Tripartites with longer centre light under
dummy pediment in outer gabled bays, each with glazed oculus
gablet under decorative ashlar apex finial.
5-bay SW elevation with 2 longer windows breaking wallhead
in slightly advanced gabled bays.
Irregular NE elevation with some modern additions.
Multi-pane glazing. Coped wallhead and apex stacks; slate
roofs with ridge ventilators.

Statement of Interest

Replaced the earlier school by Parish Church. Sandstone

dressings from Newton Quarry, Elgin. Original plan had

central balconied cupola over hall.
