Description

Early 19th century. 3-storey, 3-bay tenement forming part of terrace, with shopfronts at ground floor. Painted render. Base course; eaves course; cornice; blocking course; strip margins. Painted margins to window openings at upper floors.

NE (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: steps to central columned, corniced block-pedimented doorpiece; patera frieze; no exterior door, letterbox fanlight; single windows aligned above at 1st and 2nd floors. Single windows flanking at ground, 1st and 2nd floors; larger shop windows at ground floor, wider to left; Edwardian timber architraves.

Shop windows at ground floor; modern glazing to 2 windows to left at 1st floor, 6-pane to upper sash of window to right; plate glass timber sash and case windows at 2nd floor. Grey slate roof; stone skews; coped brick stacks; circular cans.

INTERIOR: not seen 1998.

Statement of Interest

A good surviving example of early 19th century building in the narrow Cathcart Street, which provided access from Sandgate to the New Church in Fort Street (see separate list description). Of particular note is the imposing central columned doorpiece.
