Early 19th century. 2-storey, basement and attic, 5-bay pair of houses forming part of terrace. Coursed sandstone rubble. Painted ground floor band course; cornice; blocking course. Painted margins to window openings.
NE (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: stepped platts oversail basements to 2 entrances to penultimate bays to outer left and right; lower plain margined entrance to left; timber door; single window aligned above at 1st floor; pilastered, corniced and block-pedimented doorpiece to right; raised central panel to block-pediment; 2 deeply recessed timber doors within segmental arch; single window aligned above at 1st floor; single windows to remaining bays at ground and 1st floor. Central timber glazed doors with flanking windows at basement to left and right. 4 single dormers at attic; 2 at centre, closely spaced.
Predominantly plate glass timber sash and case windows; 12-pane to outer left at ground floor; split at 1st floor to penultimate bay to right; modern glazing at basement. Grey slate roof; coped brick stacks; circular cans.
INTERIORS: not seen 1998.
A good surviving example of early 19th century building in the narrow Cathcart Street, which provided access from Sandgate to the New Church in Fort Street (see separate list description). Of particular note is the exposed sandstone rubble in the largely painted render dominated street and the block-pedimented doorpiece to No 14. Continuous ground floor band course, fenestration line, cornice and blocking course with Nos 16 and 18, and 20 Cathcart Street (see separate list descriptions).
