Description

Dated 1927. 5-storey office building, formerly sheriff court and sheriff clerk's office, on prominent corner site with Court House Square. Pink sandstone ashlar, concealed roof. Base course, coped wallhead. Single windows with modern multi-pane glazing.

ANGLE ELEVATION: centre bay advanced; 2-leaf panelled door with astragalled fanlight and moulded round-headed doorhead flanked by vertically paired windows, corbelled balcony to 1st floor, 4-light canted window to 1st, 2nd and 3rd floor with corniced and crenellated parapet, paired windows to 4th floor flanked by cast-iron half-columns rising from left and right of 3rd floor parapet supporting stepped wallhead parapet, single windows to each floor at recessed bays to left and right linked to similar bays at adjoining elevations by cill band at 1st floor.

WARD ROAD ELEVATION: 8-bay, symmetrical. 8 windows to each floor, windows to ground floor keystoned to 4 centre bays, tripartite keystone to 2nd bay from left and right, these bays also advanced with 1st and 2nd floor windows in recessed panel with segmental lintel to 2nd floor, corbelled cornice over 3rd floor window, 4 centre bay windows at 1st floor delineated by 3 cast-iron half-columns rising from cill band and supporting 2nd floor cill band.

COURT HOUSE SQUARE ELEVATION: mirror image of Ward Road Elevation except door at 3rd bay from right.

INTERIOR: not seen.

Statement of Interest

This building, erected for the Rockvilla Hotel Company, is of particular townscape importance in relation to the setting of Court House Square and the Sheriff Court itself (listed at West Bell Street). For many years this building was used as a telephone exchange.
