Description

Earlier 19th century with later additions and alterations. 2-storey, 3x5 bay, square-plan classical house on corner site. Polished ashlar; roughly squared rubble to rear with ashlar dressings. Base course, dividing band course, panelled apron and cill course at 1st floor, cornice and blocking course.

NW (JOHN STREET) ELEVATION: symmetrical composition, 5-bay (grouped 1-3-1). 4-panelled door at centre, with plate glass fanlight; window at 1st floor, flanked by blinded windows at each storey. Windows in outer bays at ground and first floor.

SW (ABERCORN STREET) ELEVATION: symmetrical, 3-bay. 4-panelled door at centre (as on John Street elevation). Window above and to each floor in flanking bays. Modern single storey extension to right with bull-faced stone cladding.

NE ELEVATION: 3-bay with right bay blank and windows to each floor of centre and left bays.

SE ELEVATION: not seen fully; later lean-to single story addition at ground.

12-paned timber sash and case windows. Graded slates; U-plan roof (creating gully to rear). 2 wallhead and coped stacks disposed symmetrically to John Street elevation (between grouped and outer bays) and also 2 to rear.

INTERIOR: not seen, 1994.

BOUNDARY WALLS: droved ashlar with coping, now partly rendered, formerly with railings.

Statement of Interest

Despite its appearance, this building post-dates Nos 3 and 5 John Street. It was not built by the time of the Boundary Commissioner's Report of 1832-33, but is seen on the 1st edition OS map and also Sutter's map. An unsympathetic free-standing harled garage has been built to NE.
