Description

Later 19th century. 2-storey, 4-bay, asymmetrical block of 2 shops with living accomodation over. Stugged, squared and snecked, honey-coloured sandstone; polished margins and dressings; string course; eaves bracket cornice; timber shop fronts; raised cills suppported on fluted brackets.

E ELEVATION: 24, BALERNO HARDWARE: 3-bay, white-painted, timber shop front; narrow pilasters framing deep-set door; painted shop name in fascia.

26, PHARMACY: 3-bay; narrow, deep-set door at centre, window to right and large shop window to left; brown-painted timber fascia; cast iron, apothecary pestel and mortar shop sign at outer left corner.

Windows near-symmetrically disposed at 1st floor; window to outer left, window off-centre to left and 2 windows grouped to outer right; later square, slate-hung dormer to outer left.

4-pane plate glass sash and case windows; large plate glass shop windows. Grey slate roof; ashlar coping to skews; corniced apex stacks.

Statement of Interest

The house is shown on the 2nd edition map and for its site, at the heart of Balerno, and its 19th century shopfronts and trade sign, passes the margins for listing.
