In terms of architectural style, Rowand Anderson's building from the 1880s is a Victorian-gothic cuckoo in the neo-classical nest of the Georgian New Town. Scaffolding and wraps have recently been removed following lengthy work on the facade. It is notable for its many statues of significant figures in Scottish history, sculpted by David Stevenson. He was born in the village of Ratho, Midlothian and trained as a sculptor under William Brodie. His works also adorn the Scott Monument in Princes Street and the Wallace Memorial in Stirling.
