Statement of Interest

According to Good, Gilmerton Place House was built in the mid-16th century but was not lived in for 200 years, and by 1893 was occupied by miners' families. A photograph circa 1900 in the National Monuments Record of Scotland (NMRS) illustrates the house; which appears to have been a laird's house similar in style to Liberton House. Good refers to a datestone of 1604 built into the garden wall, and a small circular building known as The Bath surrounded by yew trees; these have now gone. Gilmerton Place House was demolished circa 1950 and a housing estate built on the site in the 1980's. This item is now enclosed by the garden wall of No 71 Gilmerton Place and lies in southeast of the garden to No 89 Ravenscroft Street.
