Description

Late 18th century, refaced 1832; later 19th century shop fronts. 3-storey and attic, 6-bay offices with shops built out at ground. Polished cream sandstone ashlar; bays closely spaced. Unified corniced front at ground with pair of modernised shops flanking arched doorway to upper floors. 1st floor windows with architraves and cornices. Cornice and blocking course. Pair of later 19th century canted corniced piend-roofed dormers flank similar bipartite dormer.

Coursed rubble rear elevation with full-height bow to E.

Timber sash and case 12-pane windows. Ashlar coped skews; rendered stacks; grey slates.

INTERIOR: E shop (No 86) with top lit saloon to rear; that to W also extends to rear.

Statement of Interest

A Group with Nos 30-60 (even nos) George Street as a significant surviving part of Edinburgh's New Town, one of the most important and best preserved examples of urban planning in Britain.
